Evaluation of New Orleans Saints
The New Orleans Saints are one of the best NFL teams in the sport of football today. They also have one the best head coach in the NFL, but has been suspended for a year. During this NFL season they will dominate their division and will win the Superbowl.
History
The Saints were founded by John Mecom Jr. along with David Dixon in the city of New Orleans. They began playing at Tulane Stadium in 1967. The name “Saints” comes from on Nov. 1 being All Saints Day. The Saints have a large population of Catholics. Their logo is also known as the fleurdelis. The colors are gold and back. They played all their home games during the 1967 season and all the way through 1974 until they moved to their new stadium(Team/History). The new stadium is call the Mercedes Benz Super dome in New Orleans, Louisiana. However when the team started the past twenty years didn’t go well for them with only two season over .500 in wins. Then later on in the 1987-88 season’s they went 22-9 and managed to be able to go to the playoff. But disaster struck in 2005 with the hurricane Katrina. During hurricane Katrina the Superdome was used as an emergency shelter for the people of New Orleans. Later on in 2006, they managed to win their second playoff game by defeating the Falcons. Then in 2009, they were able to win their first super bowl ever by winning against the Colts and ended up breaking a franchise record by winning 13 games in a row.
Strong Points
A big reason why they are so good was because of the coaching staff that they had in 2006-2011. With their head coach being Sean Payton he had a .646 and .625 overall winning percentage in the regular season and the postseason all the way through 2011. the best seasons that he had were 20092011. Sean Payton was the best head coach during those last few years of the NFL. During the 2005 off-season the Saints picked up Drew Brees which ended up the MVP of the 2009 super bowl game. Another good thing about the Saints is that they have one of the best youth programs to help kids and kids that suffer with diseases or disabilities.
Problems
The biggest problem that happened to the Saints was Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The flood water reached the Super dome and damaged some of the stadium. So during the 2006 off-season the Saints had to spend a lot of money to open the stadium again. The owner was considering just moving the stadium to San Antonio because of how much money and time it was going to cost him. Then the only other problem that the Saints had with the NFL was that the defensive coordinator was paying his player for performance and also for injuring players on other teams. This was found on the 2009 through the 2011 season. Another problem that the NFL found out was that the head coach Sean Payton was aware of this situation and did nothing about it. The NFL suspended Sean Payton for one year and fined the team 500,000 and also four of the Saints linebackers were suspended for some games.
Science
The game of football is about the laws of physics. When you play offensive or defensive line its all about who gets lower. If you are able to get lower than the man you are trying to block or get past then you will be able to get by him(Science of Football). But if you play too high you're going to get pushed back or get knocked down. Tackling is a big part of football to. If you are a smaller player going up against a bigger player than most likely the smaller player is going to be knocked down. But if the smaller player has more momentum than the bigger player than the smaller guy has a better chance of making the tackle(Craig Freudenrich). So basically football is a game of physics and how much momentum you have going into a tackle.
Conclusion
The Saints are going to win the Superbowl this year. Even though they have gone through some tough situations they deserve to go to the super bowl again. I also can't wait until Sean Payton comes back so the team will have their confidence back and have a chance to go into the playoffs. Because Sean Payton is the best in the league.
